Sure hope you are all doing very well. So far
so good here, but am getting tired of the cold
and snow.
Another Friday, the week-end is here and there
is plenty to keep you busy with this issue.

The following isn't marketing related and is for those in
the U.S. only and affects everyone in the country.
You've heard about the big switch from analog to digital
broadcasts for television. It takes place almost a year
from now, on Feb. 17, 2009.
Without going into details, no one with cable or satellite
service will be affected, nor will anyone who gets stations
over the air with a newer TV with a digital tuner.
If you have an older T.V. set NOT hooked up to cable or
satellite, like I have one set up out in the pole barn, then
you will need a digital converter box. I won't be buying a
new T.V. to sit outside, but you either need to purchase
a new T.V. or sign up to a cable or satellite service.
Unless you want to go with the digital converter box and
at $40.00 to $50.00 it's a much cheaper way to go.
To make it even less expensive, or even free, here is how.
A government program said that it will begin sending out
coupons worth $40.00 each to any U.S. household that
requests them to subsidize buying the digital converter box.
Each household is entitled to two coupons for the boxes,
which are just coming into stores now, starting at $40.00
or $50.00, which will make the converter box cost very little
if anything.

With this big switch over to digital it does not mean you'll also
receive high-definition visuals. Your T.V. must be able to receive
Hi-Def and the program must also be broadcast that way.
Also note, don't get conned into buying a cable service as that
is NOT required to view digital T.V. broadcasts.
If you want more information, the FCC's website explains the
changes in more detail all that's involved in the digital
transition.

Php Activator.
Adding PHP code to a web page normally means you have to rename
your web page to be a ".php" file instead of a ".htm" or ".html" file.
Which means all links to the page have to be changed, for instance
from "page1.htm" to "page1.php". Just renaming a file is easy

Are Flash-based Sites Good Or Bad?

Flash-based sites have been somewhat of a craze the past few years,
and as Macromedia compiles more and more great features into Flash,
you can bet there will be more and more flash sites around the Internet. However, there is controversy surrounding Flash based sites and many
feel they are overrated unnecessary. Here's a simple breakdown of the
good and bad.
The Good:
Interactivity
Flash's Actionscript opens up a vast field of possibilities. Programmers
and designers have used Flash to create interactve features ranging from
very lively feedback forms to attractive Flash-based games. This whole
new level of interactivity will always leave visitors coming back for
more. And that is one thing we all desire, return visitors.
A standardized site
With Flash, you do not have to worry about cross-browser compatibility.
No more woes over how a certain CSS code displays differently between
Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. When you position your site elements
in Flash, they will always appear as they are as long as the user has
a Flash Player installed.
Better expression through animation
In Flash, one can make use of its animating features to convey a message
in a much more efficient and effective way. Flash is a lightweight option
for animation because it is vector based (meaning much smaller file sizes)
as opposed to real "movie files" that are raster based and hence much
larger in size.
The bad and the ugly:
The Flash player
People have to download the Flash player in advance before they can
view Flash movies, so by using Flash your visitor range will decrease considerably because not everyone will be willing to download the Flash
player just to view your site. You'll also have to put in additional
work in redirecting the user to the Flash download page if he or she
doesn't already have the Flash player installed.
Site optimization
If your content was presented in Flash, most search engines wouldn't
be able to index your content. That relates to not being able to rank
well in search engines and there will be less traffic heading to your
site. And we all know what that means, no traffic = no sales.
Load time
Users have to wait longer than usual to load Flash content compared
to regular text and images, and some visitors might just lose their
patience and click the Back button. The longer your Flash takes to
load, the more you risk losing visitors. People looking for specific
information want it like 'right now', they may be unable to wait due
to time constraints. We all have more in our lives than looking at a
screen waiting for something to happen.
The best way to go is to use Flash only when you absolutely need the interactivity and motion that comes with it. Otherwise, use a mixture
of Flash and HTML or use pure text if your site is purely to present
simple textual and graphical information.
You could say the same thing for those "movie files" everyone says we
all want. They are a great teaching tool, but are they really neccessary
for a simple ad? Not to me, and many others as well, as we simply skip
most movies and 'skim' read the text. So always include your message in
text as well to help insure your success. Many people still have a slow
dial up connection and simply don't have the time to wait around. Like
water running to the lowest point, they will seek the fastest way to
answer their questions, which will be on someone else's site!
