written is in forums. Just ask other members to give you bids on
content about your topic.

SEO And Traffic Basics For Your Business

For the next few newsletter issues I'll try and give you some
helpful information that you may or may not already know about,
but hopefully it will give you the basics or refresh your memory
in what you need to do to get yourself started on the right
track to make 2009 a more prosperous year.
Let's start with an overview of Search Engine Optimization, what it is
and how search engines work.
SEO (search engine optimization) is a process of choosing the most
appropriate and targeted keyword phrases related to your website
and working to get them to rank your site in the search engines so
that when someone searches for the keywords or phrases it returns
your site on the top of the results page.
Basic SEO involves fine tuning the content of your site along with
the HTML and Meta tags. It also involves a good link building process.
The most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL
and Ask Jeeves.
Search engines keep their methods and ranking algorithms secret, to
get credit for finding the most valuable search results and to prevent
spam pages from clogging the results.
A search engine may use hundreds of factors while ranking the listings where the factors themselves and the weight each carries may change continually.
Algorithms can differ so widely that a webpage that ranks #1 in one
search engine could rank #200 in another.
New sites don't necessarily have to be "submitted" to search engines to
be listed. A simple link from a well established site will get the search engines to visit the new site and begin to spider its contents.
It can take a few days to even weeks from the referring of a link from
such an established site for all the main search engine spiders to visit
and index the new site.
Now, the question of should you be submitting your new site to all the
search engines, and how often comes up. A debateable question. You
will hear or read you should do so every so often, but don't buy into
that. Anyone saying you need to more than once just wants to sell you
their submission service. You don't need it. Period. I submit (manually)
a brand new site to the main search engines one time. After that there
is no need to be considered as spamming them by submitting more often.
Actually, they will pick up your site fairly quickly so you really needn't
feel compelled to submit. Once your site is live, the spiders crawl
through any links from one site back to yours, and I've put new sites
up without submitting, checked my logs, and saw that they had found
my site in just a couple of days. I'll talk more on Site Submitting and
your sites Logs later on.
The smaller search engines depending on how you first submitted your
site may request your information be updated from time to time, and
that's fine. Otherwise, I don't recommend a submission service or that
you constantly submit a site. It's not like a blog where you will add content and submit your new information to be broadcast to the blogging
world.
Now let's talk about how the search engines actually work.
They use spiders to crawl your website pages and index them. A 'spider'
is an automated program that is run by the search engine system.
The spider visits a web site, reads the content on the actual site, the site's Meta tags and also follow the links that the site connects to.
The spider then returns all that information back to a central point or
depository, where the data is indexed. It will visit each link you have
on your website and index those sites as well.
The spider will periodically return to the sites to check for any new
information that has changed. The frequency with which this happens is
determined by the moderators of the search engine.
A spider is almost like a book that contains a huge table of contents,
the actual content and the links and references for all the websites it
finds during its search, and it may index up to a million pages a day.
When you ask a search engine to locate information, it is actually searching through the index which it has created and not actually
searching the web.
Different search engines produce different results and rankings because
not every search engine uses the same algorithm to get the job done.
One of the things that a search engine algorithm scans for is the
frequency and location of keywords on a web page, but it can also detect artificial keyword stuffing. Then the algorithms analyze the way that
pages link to other pages in the web.
By checking how pages link to each other, a search engine can both determine what a page is about and if the keywords of the linked pages
are similar to the keywords on the original page.
I know this may sound a bit confusing if you're new to SEO but don't
worry, once you take the time to learn the basics you find that it's not
as complicated as you may think.
Now if you don't want to research and choose keywords and work on your
own search engine ranking, you may want to hire someone to do the work
for you.
There are many marketing and promotion companies available that will do
all of the work for you or simply look at your site and make some
recommendations to increase your search engine ranking and website traffic.
They will also provide ongoing consultation and reporting to monitor your website and make recommendations for editing and improvements to
keep your site traffic flow and your search engine ranking high.
Normally your SEO experts work with your web designer to build an integrated plan right away so that all aspects of design are considered
at the same time.
But if you create your own site, be aware you must watch your choice of
keywords, never use keyword stuffing or adding many keywords to your
graphics and hiding keywords inside your html. Also be sure to use a site
map so the search engine spiders can easily follow your sites paths, plus,
your visitors need an easy way to get around your site to find what they
are looking for or they will leave fast.
So, unless you want something specific done, making and running your own
website is not that hard, just be sure all your links work, you pay close attention to your keywords and update your content on a regular basis.
The more content you add the better, because you'll have those spiders
visiting more often, and that means getting your site to come up on any
keyword searches more often. And that means more site visitors and profits.
To explain that further, we'll go into just how important search engines
are to your business, as in providing you with unlimited amounts of free visitor traffic.
Recent studies have shown that the average customer will go to one of
the search engine and do a search before deciding whether or not they
want to make a purchase.
When they perform that search the search engine will sift through the millions of pages it has indexed and present the searcher with ones that
match their requests. The matches are ranked so that the most relevant
sites are listed first.
It is also good to keep in mind that your prospective customer will probably only look at the first page of listings in the search results.
So it does matter where your website appears in the search engine
ranking. Statistics show that most people use one of the top 3 search
engines and these search engines attract more visitors to websites than anything else.
When your business is competing with hundreds, if not thousands, of
other businesses for the top spot it makes it easy to understand why
search engines are so important to your success.
It is the keywords and phrases that you choose that play the most
important role when it comes to SEO for the online or offline advertising
of your website via the search engines.
As I mentioned earlier, when customers want to find a website for information or to buy a product or service, they find what they are
looking for in one of the following ways:
1. They find a relevant website through a keyword search
via a search engine, such as Google, Yahoo or MSN.
2. They find a site by clicking on a link from another website
or a page that relates to the topic in which they are interested.
3. They find a site by hearing about it from a friend or
reading about it in an article.
So, it's quite obvious the most popular way to find a site is by the
search engines, which represents more than 90% of online users.
In other words, only 10% of the people looking for a website will use methods other than search engines.
Now I hope you understand how important the search engines can be to the
success of your business and why you should learn and use a variety of SEO techniques to get your business website to rank well in the popular search engines.
